Inside Halcyon’s Free Gastroenterology, Nutrition & Surgical Camp
One sunny Saturday morning in Upperhill, the doors at Halcyon Healthcare were opening to a familiar kind of uncertainty.
Children, men, women and elderly patients all came looking for answers to problems they had been managing for some time.
Others walked in with symptoms they had learned to live with — the occasional heartburn, persistent bloating, stomach pain that came and went, or reflux that never seemed to completely disappear.
Different ages. Different stories. One common question:
“What is actually causing this?”
On 4th June, Halcyon Healthcare held its Free Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Surgical Camp, bringing together patients, specialist doctors, nutritionists and the wider healthcare team for a day centered on digestive health, early detection and access to specialist care.
The Symptoms We Learn to Live With
Stomach and digestive problems are easy to normalise.
You eat something and feel bloated. You experience heartburn and reach for an antacid. Your stomach hurts, then feels better, so you move on.
Until it happens again.
Patients came with concerns ranging from gastritis and ulcers to acid reflux, GERD, heartburn, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
Looking Beyond the Stomach
A stomach complaint does not always begin and end with the stomach.
As a gastroenterology and hepatobiliary center in Nairobi, Halcyon looks at the wider system involved in digestion and gastrointestinal health — including the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
These organs work together in ways that are easy to take for granted until something goes wrong.
Persistent abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, reflux, unexplained digestive symptoms or other recurring concerns may sometimes require doctors to look beyond the symptom itself and investigate what is happening within the wider digestive system.
That broader perspective was an important part of the consultations offered at the camp.
One Consultation Can Change What Happens Next
For many patients, the consultation was not the final destination. It was the starting point.
After listening to their symptoms and assessing their concerns, the healthcare team could determine what needed to happen next.
Some patients were given treatment protocols. Others were referred for laboratory tests or imaging. Some required further gastrointestinal investigation, including endoscopy, while others were referred for surgical assessment.
Patients who needed additional procedures began returning to Halcyon from the following week.
The Saturday may have ended, but their care continued.
Why Early Detection Matters
Perhaps the most important message behind the camp was simple: Do NOT wait for symptoms to become unbearable before seeking help.
Digestive symptoms can disappear and return. That can make it tempting to ignore them — especially when life gets busy.
But recurring symptoms are worth investigating.
An assessment can help determine whether further tests, imaging or procedures such as an endoscopy are appropriate. Early attention can also help patients understand what they are dealing with and what their treatment options are.
